Gown Draping Workshop 
in Fredericksburg, VA

Workshop Description:

Participants will see a gown being draped on a volunteer, then will pair off and drape a gown of their own to take home and finish.

Materials Needed:
- Stays, if you have them; otherwise you should draft yourself a set of cardboard stays using the directions here, which will give your torso the necessary basic shape.  Stays patterns: J. P. Ryan, Mill Farm, or Mantua Maker
- 1 yard of white or unbleached linen for gown's bodice lining
- 5 yards of 60" wide fabric (linen or wool are recommended) for a robe a l'anglaise (the style with the pleats sewn down in back), or 7 yards of 60" wide fabric for a robe a la francaise (sack-backed gown).
- Sewing scissors, needle, thread, pins, measuring tape, and a sewing machine if you have one that you can bring (several will be available).

Workshop Schedule:
8:00 pm                 Arrive; coffee & getting acquainted
9:00 pm                 Lecture: gown styles in the 18th century
10:00 am - noon    Draping demonstration & Gown draping, Part 1
noon - 1:30 pm      Lunch (brown bag lunch - bring your own; the town also has a number of restaurants within walking distance of the workshop site)
1:30 pm - 5 pm     Gown draping, Part 2

Snacks and coffee will be provided.

From Northern Virginia:
Take I-95 south
Take Exit 133-A off of I-95 onto Rt. 17 towards Falmouth in the RIGHT hand lane.
As you start down a long hill, you'll come to Rt. 1 / RT. 17 interchange
Take a RIGHT onto Rt. 1 South 
Cross the Rappahannock River on the Falmouth Bridge.
Get into LEFT lane on the bridge to turn LEFT at the light on the other side of the bridge, onto
Princess Anne Street.
Stay on Princess Anne.
After crossing William St. the church is on the LEFT at the next corner.
The church is at the intersection of Princess Anne St. and George St.

From Richmond:
Take I-95 North.
Take Exit 130A onto Rt. 3 East
As you start down a long hill towards RT. 1 bridge, get into the LEFT lane.
After crossing under Rt. 1, get in turning lanes on the LEFT.
Turn onto William St. (Rt. 3 East)
Follow William St. until you get to Princess Anne St.
Take a RIGHT onto Princess Anne St.
After turning onto Princess Anne St. the church is on the LEFT at the next corner.
The church is at the intersection of Princess Anne St. and George St.

Parking: There is a city parking lot with all-day parking 2 blocks down from St. George's near the river on Sophia St.

Accomodations: Fredericksburg has a number of hotels and bed & breakfasts located in or near the "Old Town" area.
